Please Hold to my Hand...

After last week's critically acclaimed episode, it's a long road ahead for the two leads in this trying tale. Gathering as much of Frank and Bill's belongings as the pair could store in Bill's old beat-down Chevy pick-up truck, Joel and Ellie take on the barren roads across the outskirts of Boston, trekking toward Wyoming where they hope to meet with Joel's younger brother Tommy, in one of only few settlements believed to be quietly refuged by the firefly's. This arc slowly initiates the expected father-daughter sentiments between Joel and Ellie to escalate, with only few moments shared between the pair, having the youngster challenge her guardian with some real lame quips and puns that make Joel slowly dissipate his unyielding guard, while doing his damndest to hide it.

You can read the fear in Joel's body language wanting to shield any emotion from Ellie without divulging any personal history. Explaining to Ellie their trip is business for them both while personal for Joel alone, he tells Ellie that he doesn't give up on family while labelling her cargo - another tactic to hide his hurting character from opening up to her. However, as their exploit continues the pair are ambushed by militia believed to be after two undisclosed individuals - a child and an adult - but it is never explained whether this was Joel and Ellie. Regardless, Joel is determined to protect Ellie and get her to the firefly camp where he believes Tommy is to be staying. Armed altercations ensue with Joel trying to avert Ellie from being harmed physically and mentally, but is tested without any protection of his own.

While the episode itself bridges a gap told between important arcs of the pair’s escapade, its an imperative portion of the plot that gives insight to personal goals that continue to expand, from Ellie’s constant need to learn, and Joel’s unwillingness to forgive himself for Sarah’s untimely death. We finally see a moment shared here where it definitively displays a father guiding a daughter through deadly paths of an unruly territory, providing sanctity and peace-of-mind. Among the chaos, we’re also introduced to the leader of the aforementioned militia, Kathleen, an original character to the HBO series portrayed by Melanie Lynskey (Two and Half Men). Her merciless hunt for survivalists has no limit to the bloodshed of the innocent. Not much else is known of her intentions, but her careless nature motivates her army of ruthless militants, which impedes Joel’s mission to safely deliver Ellie.

While it’s not as emotionally impactful as Bill and Frank’s story, episode four continues to unravel the apocalyptic nature of the their universe outside of Boston’s safe haven. Kansas has been overturned into complete anarchy, with any sense of normalcy displaced, while on the brink of something utterly horrifying. An untrustworthy leader explicitly orders her crew and right-hand man to wipe out everyone, while they investigate an abandoned building that supposedly housed the escapees, but an unexpected surprise may unleash literal hell on earth. We’re almost half-way into the first season, and thus far its turbulence has been disgustingly delightful to digest. A tumultuous turn of events is expected to pique its upcoming arc where Joel, Ellie, and possibly others fight for their lives against monsters once believed to be myth. I’m so excited!

Noteworthy Mentions...

  • I grinned from ear-to-ear with Pascal and Ramsey’s re-enactment of the “sticky magazine” scene. It may paraphrase a few lines, but it’s almost a word-for-word reprisal to one of the game’s most comical moments excellently delivered by Troy Baker and Ashley Johnson, only to see it come to life – just as hilarious.

  • The father-daughter dynamic is still in its early stages, but Joel’s character is gradually beginning to open itself to the idea of accepting others in his life.

  • While Ellie is still perceived an ignorant child, she begins to show her willingness to learn, adapt and grow for the people around her – the coming of age tale for the youngster starts to evolve more as Joel guides and educates her on a life of survival.

  • Great writing and delivery all-round; we see Ellie’s sarcasm begin to influence Joel slowly with the pair giving their respective thoughts on twenty year-old Chef Boyardee Tinned Ravioli and Coffee that tastes like ‘burnt shit’.

The Last of Us is an upcoming American post-apocalyptic drama television series created by Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for HBO. Based on the 2013 video game of the same name developed by Naughty Dog, the series will follow Joel (Pedro Pascal), a smuggler tasked with escorting the teenage Ellie (Bella Ramsey) across a post-apocalyptic United States. It will feature Gabriel Luna as Joel's younger brother Tommy, Merle Dandridge as resistance leader Marlene, and Anna Torv as Joel's smuggler partner Tess.
