Top 5 Anime to kick off your 2021 – AnimeLab

From the Lab...

It’s that time of the year again. Well at least the beginning of the year that is, and what a year of Anime we have ahead of us. But before we dive into a potentially incredible season, we’ve had one hell – and I do mean HELL – of a year that presented us the perfect opportunity to catch up on a ton of television. But let’s be frank, we love our Anime above all else so I thought it would be an awesome idea to present our Top Five recommendations. In no particular order of popularity; thus five of our favourites we binged while in iso from the last year and I thought it would be appropriate to share. If anything it will prepare you for the upcoming season of Anime on offer from Australia’s premiere Anime streaming service, AnimeLab. So here are five of our favourite Anime’s to kick off your new year.

Attack on Titan

Season 4

2020 · Japanese Only

Persons under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian

It’s the highly anticipated fourth and final season to one of the most celebrated Japanese Animated series and man oh, man does it pack quite the punch. Attack on Titan’s long running animated adaptation has garnered universal acclaim throughout its grand run, and set the bar high for many Shonen anime’s that have been created since. In its concluding chapter, the war rages on with Eren and the Scouts reclaiming Wall Maria. With Shinganshina hanging in the balance, it is up to them in saving the town, and discover what secrets are kept within the basement. However, the Beast Titan has other plans with the behemoth itself, along with Reiner, Berholdt plotting to finally eliminate humanity once and for all. This is it, Earth’s last chance at survival.

Food Wars!

Season 1 & 2

2015 · Japanese Only

Persons under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian

Order Up! I had no clue what I was in for heading into Food Wars! but I’m glad I binged both season’s available via AnimeLab from beginning to end. Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma follows the amibitions of teenage chef Soma Yukihira, working part time at his father’s local diner. Soma’s unorthodox, yet highly skilled culinary potential leads him to the Totsuki Saryo Culinary Institute after his father suddenly closed his shop. What follows is a series of unforgettable and unimaginable anime logic, that embellishes the complete insanity of a highly strict, almost militant, university of food. Young Chef’s from around the globe attend in hopes of becoming the Institutes top Chef. Lewd, crude, hilariously rude, this series entails an amazing demonstration in creativity, pacing, writing, lovable characters, and resolve. Highly recommend checking this out.

Charlotte

シャーロット

2015 · Japanese & English

Persons under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian

Now this is a series I almost passed up. Wasn’t sure I was going to be that interested, yet I was enveloped by its incredible narrative that took me by complete surprise. Taking place within an alternate universe, a comet passes the Earth every 75 years, spreading dust on the planet causing a phenomena within children that inhale the unworldly particles. The comet known as Charlotte, causes this historical phenomena, but only within preadolescent children that are able to harness these abilities until they hit puberty. Our protagonist Yuu Otosaka, gains the ability to control another person for only five seconds. Accidentally revealing himself to a cohort with the ability to turn invisible, Nao Tomori convinces Otosaka in transferring to Hoshinoumi Academy, to join the student council, where each member also possesses supernatural abilities obtained from Charlotte.

My Hero Academia

Season 4

2019 · Japanese & English

Persons under the age of 15 must be accompanied by a parent or adult guardian

Plus Ultra! There’s no doubt that My Hero Academia is the biggest, most notorious Anime out there right now. It’s a juggernaut, a global sensation that has attracted millions into watching the Shonen with its alluring narrative, and vibrancy. The Anime adaptation has a long road ahead of itself, if it plans to keep up with the source material in its Mangaka, however Boku No Hero Academia has proven to be an Animated commodity within its television series, in its own right. Following from events that concluded in Season 3, the students from Class 1-A are all grown up and ready to take on the world within the “Shie Hassaikai Arc”. A new threat looms in the evil Overhaul, also known as Kai Chisaki, a former head of the Yakuza group. The villainous anarchist is in denial of heroes having the ability to utilise their quirks for good, and only see people who hold their respective supernatural abilities as the root of evil. An amazing season on the already established legacy of this franchise. A must watch.

Yuri!!! on ICE

Born to Make History!

2016 · English Only

Recommended for mature audiences 15 years and over

If you’re unaware, a Yuri!!! on ICE feature length movie adaptation is on the way this year, surrounding the events prior to the animated series, following the career of legendary figure skater, Victor Nikiforov. For those uninitiated, Yuri!!! on ICE is absolutely one of the best Japanese Animated series of ALL TIME. This is an Anime I watch at least once a year, and was so excited to have an excuse to binge it once more. The series follows aspiring figure skater Yuri Katsuki, an established representative, and quite notorious in as Japan’s only high profile skater at the Winter Grand Prix. Developing an anxiety for the sport, the youngster heads home with no desire in returning to the sport. Working for his parents at their BNB, Yuri meets with his old classmates at the local ice skating rink, there he showcases his skillset that mirrors his lifelong hero, Victor. After a private session leaks on the internet, Victor travels to Japan in hopes of finding Yuri and offering to become his coach, and winning the next Winter Grand Prix.
