Park Beyond Preview

Impossify the Impossible...

From the studio that gave us Tropico 6, comes a project of impossible proportions – literally. Park Beyond looks to defy logic and re-introduce the theme park simulator, amalgamating “Civlization” like mechanics to build a rollercoaster dreamscape. For many that may remember Bullfrog Production’s Theme Park series, this is somewhat similar but amplifies its aesthetic by a metric tonne, allowing the player to envision a successful theme park business that thrives on its integrity. Portraying a team of ambitious architects that looks to manifest the wildest rides and largest entertainment hub, Park Beyond’s outlier relies on not only pursuing the manufacturing sim, but pushing a lofty campaign that progresses in a successful business launch.

Thanks to the kind folk at Bandai Namco, we were able to get a small preview of the title before its reveal at Geoff Keighley’s Opening Night Live at Gamescom 2021. Limbic Entertainment’s Level Designer Louis Vogt, and Producer Marco Huppertz, filled us in on the title’s dazzling mechanics aptly coined “Impossification” – the unconventional union of both Impossible and Manifestation – which in part demonstrates Park Beyond’s fundamental gameplay loop, allowing you to take a stronghold of your dream theme park, no matter how challenging the insanity may be. This allows you to carve out a quadruple-decker Ferris-wheel, shoot patrons from a cannon through flaming hoops, drench the crowd with a gigantic Kraken while it launches riders into the ether, all while maintaining control of business practices to keep your park afloat.

Presented more-or-less as a point-and-click item drop style builder, the title looks to launch simultaneously for Windows PC, XBOX Series and PlayStation 5. This alleviates the hassles of many that love a good sims title, but may be stifled by their respective hardware. However, judging from the insurmountable manufacturing dockets that may ramp up in-game, it’s going to need a hell of a lot of power to juice these incredible theme parks, encasing rides that intertwine through eachother. This title is a potential testament to pushing hardware beyond known limits.

While little is known about its campaign’s narrative, the previews divulged information on our partners Phil and Izzy, both big dreamers and believers that the pair could create the ultimate dream in an astonishing feat, if given the support of a financial backer – You. Phil’s oddball personality drafts the blueprint that convinces the impossible can happen, as long as they “impossify” their intuition. The whimsical Izzy, backs her elder as a financialist, convincing the protagonist that this outlandish experiment could come to fruition. Of course, this stems to the title’s caveats that the player will need to deal with first hand. Objectives need to be met to progress through your campaign, and financial milestones are calendared. This hearkens to the RPG-sim industry standard framework that has made the genre an unequivocal fan favourite.

As soon as we were presented with the first frame of previews, I knew that I was in for an aesthetically pleasing experience with a vibrant mixture colours and detailed textures. Both Vogt and Huppertz expressed Park Beyond as Limbic’s most enthusiastic video game the company has worked on, looking to push their motivations from their pre-existing title’s to new ventures within theme park simulation genre. Park Beyond demonstrates a wide scope of possibilities that could exponentially escalate from its upcoming launch, with additional features that would expand and broaden ideas off its base archetype. There’s no doubt that it draws heavy inspiration from Tropico and the aforementioned Theme Park titles, but the ideas bought to the table here are refreshing and incredibly enticing.

The idea of fortifying and constructing a ride that launches patrons from one track to entirely new attraction is hazardous in nature, but it’s a fantasy theme park that allows you to go to those extremities. Your fantasy theme park, that is. The ultimate rollercoaster ride that allows you to recreate those childhood fantasies we used to build with our toys, legos and some sticky tape. It’s ideas on paper that existentially come to life in a creative theme. Sinking hours upon hours into old top-down sim and civ titles, I’ll be grinning from ear-to-ear impossifying the impossible, bringing my theme park to life. Hope people are ready to fly through some molten rock – don’t worry, the backup plan is for them to land inside the Kraken pool to cool off, complimentary aloe-vera bottles at entry.

Park Beyond releases for Windows PC, XBOX Series, and PlayStation 5 in 2022.
