GUIDE: Optimise your Steam Deck to it’s greatest potential

Running at the speed of light - almost...

The Steam Deck is already an incredibly powerful portable machine. It runs AAA games like a dream, but it’s not without its optimal faults. There are some staggers and jitters that may occur on titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn or God of War. Well today, I’m here to show you a third party application that deems to eradicate all qualms and quandaries claiming to clean these issues – and I can definitely vouch for it. CryoByte33 has released his tool known as CryoUtilities 2.0, that improves overall performance of your deck and uses available drive space and VRAM to push your deck to its greatest potential. There are a plethora of tools that already enhance the Deck’s performance, but this is unlike any other, and will only take you five to ten minutes to perform and complete.

#1: Setting a Sudo Password..

Launch Desktop Mode by pressing the STEAM button again, selecting Power, then Switch to Desktop

If you haven’t set a Sudo password for your Deck, you will need to for your installation to process. Select System Settings on the taskbar (the icon that looks like level meters) and select Users. Here you will get a generic “Steam Deck User” profile. Set this to your liking, then press Change Password. I would set this to something real easy to remember. Once you’re done, press Set Password and close out of System Settings.

#2: Install CryoUtilities 2.0...

Launch your respective Internet browser, then visit this page and right click this link and select “Save As”. Save the file “InstallCryoUtilities.desktop” in the Desktop folder of your Steam Deck.

Now navigate to your Desktop and double click the installation. It will bring up a command prompt showing the process, which should not take too long.

#3: Run CryoUtilities...

Once CryoUtilities has installed, you should see three new icons on your Desktop. Double click on “CryoUtilities”, input the SUDO password you just created or had pre-existing on your Steam Deck, then select “Recommended”. This will begin the process of choosing the right hardware settings to optimise the performance of the Steam Deck ‘s hardware.

Give the process some time as it could take up to thirty minutes to complete, depending on the size of the Deck.

#4: Clean Deck Data...

Now while I would say this is optional, I recommend it. Once the “Recommended” process has finished, select the Storage tab at the top, then select the “Clean” button. This will generate a list of installed and uninstalled games on your Deck that has stored texture cache that you may no longer need.

From here, you can select games that are not installed on your system, and delete the unnecessary file cache’s that take up valuable drive space. This won’t take too long.

After this complete, congratulations you have successfully optimised your Steam Deck to run at greater speeds and optimal performance for your library. This will help eradicate any stutters or persisting issues that some games may have on the portable device.

From here you can close the app, and restart the device. Happy Gaming!
